  • Dear friends of the MCA,

    As I step into the role of Board Chair for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, I am both honored and energized to lead during such a vibrant season of creativity and community. Looking back on this past fiscal year—from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025—I am inspired by all that we accomplished together and proud to share an overview of the museum’s activities in this year’s Annual Report.

    This year reaffirmed the power of contemporary art to spark connection, conversation, and change. Our galleries, theater, and gathering spaces came alive with joy and curiosity through thoughtful exhibitions, performances, and programs that brought people together and built lasting connections.

    Two highlights stand out as reflections of our community’s strength. The MCA’s 2025 Art Auction was more than a fundraising powerhouse: it was a celebration of decades of relationships between artists and curators, galleries and collectors, Trustees and staff, and a demonstration of our shared belief in the MCA’s mission. Meanwhile, we welcomed over 16,000 people to 70 sold-out performances and events, including the beloved Tuesdays on the Terrace—an illustration how deeply the museum connects with Chicago and its many visitors.

    None of this would have been possible without you. Whether you are a member, donor, visitor, or advocate, you are at the heart of everything we do. Your support fuels exhibitions that inspire, programs that connect, and a museum that energizes our city. I’m also grateful for the contributions of my predecessor, Cari Sacks, and for the dedication of our Trustees and staff, whose commitment laid the groundwork for this momentum.

    As I begin my tenure, I look forward to building on this foundation—partnering with our Trustees, staff, and supporters to deepen the MCA’s impact, elevate artists’ voices, and create meaningful cultural experiences for Chicago and beyond.   • Dear friends,

    As we reflect on fiscal year 2025, I am deeply grateful for the community that makes the MCA sing—our artists, visitors, members, donors, Trustees, and staff. Together, we welcomed 182,126 visitors and transformed the museum into a civic space where contemporary art fosters belonging, fuels discovery, and sparks dialogue.

    This year, we presented some of the most compelling art of our time, strengthening the MCA’s role as a cultural catalyst in Chicago and beyond. In February Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me harnessed technology to confront conflict, migration, and memory, while over the summer Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom reframed the spectacle of sport and celebrity with striking clarity. Our Kovler Atrium became a site of reflection and community through Do Ho Suh’s monumental installation Who Are We, a meditation on identity and connection, and Edie Fake’s vibrant The Free Clinic for Gender Affirming Care—part of City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago, which illuminates the essential yet underrecognized role of local artists and activists in shaping queer history and culture. As I write this, our fourth-floor galleries are alive with Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, a landmark retrospective of an artist who pioneered art as a vehicle for peace, wonder, and participation.

    The same spirit of inquiry animated our performances and learning programs this year. Anne Collod’s Moving alter-natives revisited colonial legacies in modern dance, while Kaneza Schaal returned to our stage with KLII just before receiving the 2025 Doris Duke Artist Award. In Learning, 21 Minus: Time gave young artists the run of the museum for a day of installations and performances, and The SPACE Between paired Chicago high school students with artist Gloria “Gloe” Talamantes to explore the transformative power of art in civic life.

    Equally significant was our work to increase access and inclusion. The MCA’s bilingual initiative was recognized in the Chicago Sun-Times as a national model, making us one of the few US museums where Spanish is fully integrated across galleries, programs, and education. Bilingual Family Days and new celebrations such as Día de Reyes extend this work, ensuring the MCA is not only in Chicago but truly of Chicago.

    Any reflection on the past year must celebrate the remarkable 2025 Art Auction. Occurring only once every five years, this signature event gathered artists, collectors, gallerists, and friends in celebration of contemporary art. Beyond its fundraising success, the 2025 Art Auction honored the relationships that sustain the museum and the bold artistic voices it champions, embodying the spirit of community and shared purpose that defines this institution.

    FY25 also marked the first full year of leadership for Joey Orr, Deputy Director and Chief of Curatorial Affairs, and Courtney Rowe, Chief of Strategy and Board Relations Officer, whose vision and collaboration have been vital in shaping the MCA. We also celebrated the promotion of Jadine Collingwood to Pamela Alper Associate Curator and welcomed Gemma Kim as our new Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow, among other exciting new voices at the museum.

    Looking ahead to 2026, I’m energized by the momentum we’ve built together. The MCA is a gathering place for Chicago’s creative and cultural community—it is also an international platform that carries artists’ ideas onto the world stage. I am deeply grateful to our Board of Trustees for their leadership, and to every artist, visitor, member, donor, and colleague whose commitment sustains our mission. I look forward to all we will imagine and accomplish together in the years ahead.

  • Can Art’s Soft Power Help American Diplomacy?

He and Madeleine Grynsztejn, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago’s Pritzker Director, are using art to bridge the worlds of two seemingly disparate places. This is thanks in part to the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program, which has worked to provide artworks and throw exhibitions in embassies, consultants, and other diplomatic facilities around the world for nearly five decades. In this case, the program has helped Grynsztejn and Emanuel acquire and place art in institutions in both Japan and Chicago.”
