In 2024, Faith Ringgold: American People and Nicole Eisenman: What Happened brought these values to life, offering audiences transformative perspectives on the complexities of the human experience.

Whether through groundbreaking exhibitions, engaging performances, or dynamic learning programs, the MCA continues to be a space where art and community come together in meaningful ways. As we look back on 2024, I am filled with gratitude for the vibrant community that makes the MCA possible—our artists, visitors, members, donors, and staff. Your partnership and support allows us to continually push boundaries, create space for meaningful connections, and ensure contemporary art remains a powerful force for inspiration and dialogue.

This year, the MCA’s strategic principles—championing revelatory art, advancing social belonging, and sustaining purpose-driven operations—guided everything we achieved together. Through these pillars, we brought ambitious exhibitions, groundbreaking performances, and transformative programs to life.

Highlights from 2024 include Faith Ringgold: American People, a landmark retrospective that showcased Ringgold’s six-decade career as an artist, activist, and storyteller. From her iconic story quilts to her bold political posters, this exhibition invited audiences to explore powerful narratives of identity, justice, and resilience. Later in the year, Nicole Eisenman: What Happened presented a deeply personal yet universally resonant exploration of painting and sculpture. Eisenman’s work, celebrated for its humor, intimacy, and incisive social commentary, engaged visitors in reflections on the complexities of human relationships and collective experiences.

We also deepened our commitment to fostering belonging by amplifying diverse voices and experiences. As part of this mandate, we continue our efforts to become a fully bilingual museum, in English and Spanish, reflecting the needs of the Spanish-speaking communities that make up 30 percent of Chicago and are rapidly growing. This commitment has already led to a significant increase in attendance by Latino families at our Family Days, with total attendance nearly doubling between 2022 and 2023.

This year, we welcomed Dr. Joey Orr as our Deputy Director and Chief of Curatorial Affairs, a vital addition to our leadership team who will work in close collaboration with Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer Gwen Perry Davis. Joey’s expertise will help propel the MCA’s artistic vision forward, ensuring our exhibitions, performances, and programs remain dynamic and impactful. His arrival marks an exciting chapter for the MCA as we continue to strengthen our foundation for the future.

Looking ahead, I am energized by the momentum we have built together. At a time when our need for connection and understanding is more urgent than ever, the MCA serves as a bridge—bringing people together, fostering dialogue, and amplifying a range of voices through the lens of art and culture. Your support enables us to create a space where art not only inspires but also unites, helping us navigate and reflect on the complexities of our shared world.
