Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom presents 25 years of work from artist Paul Pfeiffer (b. 1966, Honolulu, HI; lives in New York, NY), whose practice interrogates ideas of spectacle and mass culture. By repurposing the tools and systems of media production—including editing, staging, and outsourcing—Pfeiffer recontextualizes global celebrities such as pop stars, film actors, and athletes to reveal relationships between audiences and icons. As the artist puts it, “who’s using who? Is the image making us, or do we make images?”

Whether through televised broadcasts of sporting events, editorial photographs of cultural icons, or the ecstasy of a soccer stadium, Pfeiffer interrogates the consumption of images and culture. For Pfeiffer, the basketball court, the boxing ring, and the stadium not only serve as platforms for grand spectacles but as sites where the body politic—of a nation, of a community, of society—is imagined, defined, and contested.

Spanning two and a half decades of work, the exhibition features works by Pfeiffer in the MCA Collection, including Fragments of a Crucifixion (After Francis Bacon) (1999) and Study for Morning After the Deluge (2001), as well as Self-Portrait as a Fountain (2000), which is part of the recent D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift. This exhibition is the MCA’s fourth that centrally features Pfeiffer’s work, following his career-defining solo show Paul Pfeiffer in 2003, MCA Screen: Paul Pfeiffer in 2018, and Fragments of a Crucifixion in 2019. The accompanying catalogue for this exhibition includes an interview from Fragments of a Crucifixion between Pfeiffer and former MCA Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow Chanon Kenji Praepipatmangkol, and features contributions from University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Tom Gunning, artist Julie Mehretu, and historian Lawrence Chua.

Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and curated by Clara Kim, Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Paula Kroll, Curatorial Assistant. The MCA presentation is curated by Bana Kattan, former Pamela Alper Associate Curator, with Iris Colburn, Curatorial Associate.

  • In the context of sports, both on the field and also off the field, in the production booth, the sense of like a kind of infinity of the digital image combined with this intense physicality and mediatization to me crystallized as like a sense of like apocalyptic future.

I come from a family of musicians, specifically church musicians associated with a Protestant American university in the Philippines. I just grew up around the production of church music and in retrospect the production of, kind of, American ritual.

In 1990, I moved to New York and I had friends who worked for some of the ad agencies and I would beg them to let me come to their offices and just observe them working, because I wanted to know like what they were doing on these screens. It looked like printmaking on steroids to me.

The Pure Products Go Crazy was the first video that I made and it was made in the student lab at Parsons. I was really just trying to mine, you know, this idea that there’s some part of me that is in everyone else via these kind of Hollywood images. And that they could be used because of their familiarity to speak to things that were not so familiar, specifically, like what it means to grow up in an institution of American education in the Philippines, and to be part of a legacy of kind of American imperialism. The other side of the moon to American culture that in my opinion, American culture couldn’t exist without.

You know, not having grown up as a sports fan, I found myself with my friends going to WNBA games at the Garden. It was kind of like a passion thing for kind of queer East Village to like support the New York Liberty, and was immediately wowed by the intense visuality of it and immediately kind of shifted into looking at VHS footage of basketball games and found, you know, this image of Larry Johnson doing a victory gesture or like a victory dance after a slam dunk that became Fragment of a Crucifixion.

It’s kind of this very exuberant emotional moment, but by breaking it down to a fragment and then subjecting it to a loop, it turns the meaning of the intense emotion into a kind of ambiguous thing that could be read multiple ways.

I was going in as a non-fan and in a way maybe more attuned to the background, like the sense of the production of a kind of ritual event. So in a sense, for me, it’s like almost like a church service.

In the production of spectacular images for home consumption on TV, there’s this very intense physical performance. In some ways it’s very abstracted and mechanical and ultimately gives birth to a seemingly flattened, perfected, shiny kind of image. But behind it is like this intense physicality.

The whole pageant of it is like, again, like a church service and has to do with the purposeful production of all the kind of affective possibilities of the sensorium, of all the senses being brought to bear in creating a very potent experience.

There’s a way in which on some level, it’s meant to bring every individual in the crowd into a kind of alignment with a national agenda. In a way it’s like a sensory version of propaganda.

If you look away from where you’re supposed to look and kind of focus on the mechanics, you see the production of what is felt as individual perspective in a kind of rich fabrication process that actually seems predetermined, such that the individual seems to dissolve.

  • – [Neh] Here. OK. Let’s try Pacquiao first.
    – [Lek] Sure. Going straight through? Or better bit by bit.
    – [Neh] Yeah.
    – [Lek] This sound, “Pae-Pae,” the gloves should touch each other before leaving.
    – [Neh] Got it.
    – [Lek] Here, like this. Not too hard. Ok, hang on.
    – [Neh] Too many. A bit too many. Looks like it didn’t even hit. Let’s get back to the old one.
    – [Lek] Oh yeah?
    – [Neh] Make it different from…
    – [Lek] Yeah, right. Different from punching. They’re just touching, like a greeting. The first is light, the second a bit harder. Let’s try it one more time.
    – [Neh] Yes.
    – [Lek] Here it should be like…
    – [Neh] Oh! Not sure if it hits.
    – [Lek] Yes, hits his guard. It hits but very slim.
    – [Neh] Wait, wait. Hang on. Let me hear it first. Oops…
    – [Lek] That one’s too big.
    – [Neh] Right, should have passed.
    – [Lek] There was no “Prud-Prad, Prud-Prad.”
    – [Neh] Yes. OK. Good.
    – [Lek] Yes, this one’s good. “Pra-a-a-d.” See, he’s swinging also. Got it?
    – [Neh] Missed it.
    – [Lek] Mayweather missed it?
    – [Neh] Missed it all. Well, hit a bit.
    – [Lek] Make a small one then.
    – [Neh] Hang on… OK. Good.
    – [Lek] Here. “Pru-u-u-b.”
    – [Neh] “Pra-a-ab” is better. Not “Tub.”
    – [Lek] Got it.
    – [Neh] If just jabs, not hitting, it should be like this.
    – [Lek] Yeah, right. Just slight scratches. Not hit… Hit? Slightly scratched.
    – [Neh] Slightly.
    – [Lek] OK, one sec. Part.
    – [Neh] Uh.
    – [Lek] Looks like it didn’t hit the tummy, right? Oh, it hits.
    – [Neh] It hits. Hold on.
    – [Lek] Sure. Well, let me change the tummy “Puk” a bit. Um… the tummy.
    – [Neh] OK.
    – [Lek] Let me change the tummy “Puk.”
    – [Neh] The tummy?
    – [Lek] The tummy, a bit “Puk.” “Puk” the tummy and then twist.
    – [Neh] Alright.
    – [Lek] Get in there and mix in some skin sounds. “Hoob.” “Fued.”
    – [Neh] Hit it. Here?
    – [Lek] Slightly. Nah, not hit. Want a hit sound?
    – [Neh] This one, slightly touch the gloves.

    – [Lek] OK, ready. Go.
    – [Neh] Let’s eat.
    – [Lek] Hang on… I want a “fuud” sound again here.
    – [Neh] Sure.
    – [Lek] Hang on a sec. OK, give Mayweather a hug when he goes down.
    – [Neh] OK, go back.
    – [Lek] Hug. “Peub-Peub.” Twice.
    – [Neh] OK.
    – [Lek] One, two… then flick away. Entangled.
    – [Neh] OK.
    – [Lek] Just a little.
    – [Neh] Yes.
    – [Lek] It’s…
    – [Neh] Messy?
    – [Lek] Not really. It’s just all sounding the same.
    – [Neh] It does? Come on then.
    – [Lek] When they engage each other… hold on. One sec.
    – [Neh] Here, engaging here, right?
    – [Lek] Yes, it’s… Like this. It’s all “Tub-Tub-Tub-Tub-Tub.” It all sounds the same.
    – [Neh] OK. Got it.
    – [Lek] Hang on.
    – [Neh] Sure.
    – [Lek] This time take the punch please, Uncle Neh.
    – [Neh] Sorry, Uncle Lek.
    – [Lek] Never mind. Take the punch, then away. “Preud-Preud.”
    – [Neh] Right.

    – [Lek] Hello, sounds clear enough?
    – [Neh] OK, next.
    – [Lek] Whoa, look. Mayweather slaps the leg. He slaps.
    – [Neh] Right, just slightly slap. Slight one.
    – [Lek] Yes, sir.
    – [Neh] OK. OK, movement, shall we?
    – [Lek] Sure. Too much added?
    – [Neh] Huh?
    – [Lek] Yeah, a bit too much added. At the engagement.
    – [Neh] Gloves only slightly touching. Here. Give me the gloves touching.
    – [Lek] OK.

    – [Neh] OK.
    – [Lek] This part here?
    – [Neh] “Pak.”
    – [Lek] Let’s try inside the ring next. Yeah, footsteps for this part. Continue with the same side?
    – [Neh] Hold on, let me double check, please. Ah, ah! Ahh! Feet stepping lightly.
    – [Lek] Come on. One more time.
    – [Neh] Light footsteps here, right?
    – [Lek] Yeah, starting from this scene.
    – [Neh] Yes.
    – [Lek] OK, ready?
    – [Neh] Yes.
    – [Lek] There’s a tiny jump.
    – [Neh] Ugh… not very flexible.
    – [Lek] Hang on. One sec. “Juek!”
    – [Neh] Yeah.
    – [Lek] There should be a tiny jump here. Let’s get going.
    – [Neh] Shall we?
    – [Lek] This is gonna be a long one. OK, ready?
    – [Neh] Yeah, sure… a long one.
    – [Lek] Start at this point right here. Would you… at this point… would you fix that “Poing” when he punches? “Pueb, Fueb.” The foot. Graze the floor with it.
    – [Neh] OK. Standing still, right?
    – [Lek] But of course!
    – [Neh] Come on.
    – [Lek] Ready, go… OK, one sec. Ah, just one sliding motion.
    – [Assistant] Oops, sorry. I almost bumped into him.
    – [Neh] Sounds like the wood is slipping. Make it fit snugly. After a while it starts to slip.
    – [Assistant] Yeah.
    – [Neh] Oh well, it only knocks on this side. The wood is slipping on this side. What to do? Jumping around you can feel it slip. There, see?
    – [Assistant] Something’s loose… Alright?

    – [Lek] Better I do this sitting down… since we’re going straight through.
    – [Neh] There, I want it “Fued.” One single “Fued.”
    – [Lek] OK, OK. “Fued, fued” the front foot, right? Or “Fued” the swinging foot? “Fued…”
    – [Neh] The other foot, there.
    – [Lek] Alright.
    – [Neh] OK, hang on. Emphasize it. Twist the foot. But this foot is lifted. The rear foot. “Pued.”
    – [Lek] Should it be the other foot?
    – [Neh] The other foot. Yes, that one. This foot, “Pued,” to this way.
    – [Lek] Yes.
    – [Neh] Tiptoe. The toe. There, he shook off the rear foot.
    – [Lek] OK.
    – [Neh] Cut inside… “Tik-tik-tik-tik. Pub-pub-pub-pub.” End of the round. “Pub-pub.”
    – [Lek] Alright.
    – [Neh] OK.
    – [Lek] Yes.
    – [Neh] One sec. Um, notice the foot. Heavy enough here? “Tuek.” This leg. It’s… hang on. It’s… too much. Looks a bit too much.
    – [Lek] OK.
    – [Neh] This point looks like there’s too much twist. Let’s try it standing still.
    – [Lek] Alright.
    – [Neh] One more time.
    – [Lek] Yes.
    – [Neh] OK, hang on. Well… OK.
    – [Lek] Hang on. Let me see the picture a bit.

    – [Neh] Cut!
    – [Lek] There!
    – [Woman] You’re playing Pacquiao?
    – [Lek] Yeah.
    – [Woman] Awesome! We’re doing Muay-Thai boxing. It’s Muay Thai. You shouldn’t just keep on recording!
    – [Neh] Why not?
    – [Woman] Well, just look at what you’re doing! It’s a big pileup!
    – [Neh] Ah… when he gest to this point here…
    – [Lek] Yeah. More forceful, right?
    – [Neh] “Puek-puek.”
    – [Lek] Yeah. The whole body.
    – [Neh] Right, OK. OK.
    – [Lek] “Pub,” here. The leg… The leg… The third step…

  • – [Neh] Aquí. Bien. Probemos con Pacquiao primero.
    – [Lek] Claro. ¿De frente? O mejor poco a poco.

    – [Neh] Espera, espera, espera. Déjame oírlo primero. Ups…
    – [Lek] Ese es demasiado fuerte.
    – [Neh] Cierto, debería haber pasado.
    – [Lek] No hubo ningún “Prud-Prad, Prud-Prad”.
    – [Neh] Ok. Dale. Bien.
    – [Lek] Sí, este es bueno. “Pra-aad”. Mira, también está golpeando. ¿Entendido?
    – [Neh] No lo vi.
    – [Lek] ¿Mayweather no lo atajó?
    – [Neh] Me perdí todo. Bueno, como que me golpeó un poco.
    – [Lek] Haz uno leve entonces.
    – [Neh] Espera… dale. Bien.
    – [Lek] Aquí. “Pru-uub”.
    – [Neh] “Pra-a-ab” es mejor. No “Tub”.
    – [Lek] Entendido.
“Hoob”. “Fued”.
    – [Neh] Golpéalo. ¿Aquí?
    – [Lek] Un poco. No, que no sea un golpe. ¿O quieres un sonido de golpe?
    – [Neh] Este, toca ligeramente los guantes.

    – [Lek] Bien, listos, vamos.
    – [Neh] Vamos a comer.
    – [Lek] Espera… Quiero un sonido “fuud” aquí otra vez.
    – [Neh] Por supuesto.
    – [Lek] Un abrazo. “Peub-Peub”. Dos veces.
    – [Neh] Está bien.
    – [Lek] Uno, dos… y luego un golpe. Confuso.
    – [Neh] Está bien.
    – [Lek] Solo un poco.
    – [Neh] Sí.
    – [Lek] Es…
    – [Neh] ¿Confuso?
    – [Lek] No realmente. Simplemente que todo suena como igual.
    – [Neh] ¿En serio? A ver, pues.
    – [Lek] Cuando se enfrenten… espera. Un segundo.
    – [Neh] Aquí, funciona aquí, ¿verdad?
    – [Lek] Sí, es… Así. Es todo con el “Tub-Tub-Tub-Tub-Tub”. Suena igual.
    – [Neh] Dale. Entendido.
    – [Lek] Espera.
    – [Neh] Por supuesto.
    – [Lek] Esta vez, por favor, compadre Neh.
    – [Neh] Lo siento, compadre Lek.
    – [Lek] No importa. Recibe el golpe y luego te mueves. “Preud-Preud”.
    – [Neh] Correcto.

    – [Lek] Aló, ¿suena suficientemente claro?
    – [Neh] Sí, siguiente.
    – [Lek] ¡Mira! Mayweather golpea la pierna. Le da un golpe.
    – [Neh] Bueno, solo una golpe, uno leve.
    – [Lek] Sí, señor.
    – [Neh] Dale. Dale movimiento, ¿de acuerdo?
    – [Lek] Claro. ¿Demasiado?
    – [Neh] ¿Eh?
    – [Lek] Fue demasiado. En ese encuentro.
    – [Neh] Los guantes apenas se tocan. Mira. Dame los guantes que se tocan.
    – [Lek] Está bien.

    – [Neh] Está bien.
    – [Lek] ¿Y esta parte de aquí?
    – [Neh] “Pak.”
    – [Lek] Intentemos dentro del ring ahora. Sí, pasos para esta parte. ¿Seguimos con el mismo lado?
    – [Neh] Espera, déjame comprobarlo, por favor. ¡Ah, ah! ¡Ahh! Son pies que pisan ligero.
    – [Lek] Vamos. Una vez más.
    – [Neh] Pasos ligeros aquí, ¿verdad?
    – [Lek] Sí, empezando por esta escena.
    – [Neh] Sí.
    – [Lek] OK, ¿listo?
    – [Neh] Sí.
    – [Lek] Hay un pequeño salto.
    – [Neh] Ugh… no es muy flexible.
    – [Lek] Espera. Un segundo. “¡Juek!”
    – [Neh] Sí.
    – [Lek] Debería haber un pequeño salto aquí. ¡Vamos!
    – [Neh] ¿Vamos?
    – [Lek] Esto va a ser largo. ¿Listos?
“Pueb, Fueb”. El pie roza el suelo con él.
    – [Neh] Dale. Se queda quieto, ¿no?
    – [Lek] ¡Por supuesto!
    – [Neh] Vamos.
    – [Lek] Listos, ya… espera, un segundo. Ah, solo un movimiento de deslizamiento.
    – [Asistente] Ups, perdón. Casi choco con él.
    – [Neh] Parece que la madera se resbala. Se ajusta bien. Al rato empieza a resbalar.
    – [Asistente] Sí.
    – [Neh] Bueno, solo golpea de este lado. La madera se resbala de este lado. ¿Qué hago? Si salto se siente resbalar. ¿Ves?
    – [Asistente] Algo está suelto… ¿No te parece?

    – [Lek] Vale, vale. “Fued, fued” el pie delantero, ¿no? ¿O “Fued” el pie que balancea? “Fued…”
    – [Neh] El otro pie, allí.
    – [Lek] Está bien.
    – [Neh] Bueno, espera. Enfócalo. Gira el pie. Pero el pie que se está levantado. El pie trasero. “Pued”.
    – [Lek] ¿Debería ser el otro pie?
    – [Neh] El otro pie. Sí, ese. Este pie, “Pued”, para acá.
    – [Lek] Sí.
    – [Neh] De puntillas. La punta del pie. Ahí le movió la pata trasera.
    – [Lek] Está bien.
    – [Neh] Corte interior… “Tic-tac-tac. Bar-bar-bar-bar”. Se acabó esta pasada. “Bar-bar”.
    – [Lek] Está bien.
    – [Neh] Está bien.
    – [Lek] Sí.
    – [Neh] Un segundo. Eh, fíjate en el pie. ¿Pesa bastante aquí? “Tuek”.
    – [Neh] Bueno, espera. Bueno… bueno.
    – [Lek] Espera. Déjame ver la imagen un poco.

    – [Neh] ¡Corte!
    – [Lek] ¡Ahí!
    – [Mujer] ¿Estás jugando con Pacquiao?
    – [Lek] Sí.
    – [Mujer] ¡Genial! Esto es boxeo Muay Thai. Esto es Muay Thai. ¡No deberías seguir grabando!
    – [Neh] ¿Por qué no?

  • I wish to convey my deepest gratitude for your love and support. I am doing well and I am strong.

As you may already know, after my tour ended, I remained out of the country undergoing treatment for a dependency on pain medication. This medication was initially prescribed to see the excruciating pain that I was suffering after recent reconstructive surgery on my scalp.

There have been many disgusting statements made recently concerning allegations of improper conduct on my part. These statements about me are totally false. As I have maintained from the very beginning, I am hoping for a speedy end to this horrifying, horrifying experience to which I have been subjected. I shall not in this statement respond to all of the false allegations being made against me, since my lawyers have advised me that this is not the proper forum in which to do that.

I will say that I am particularly upset by this handling of this matter by the incredible, terrible mass media. At every opportunity, the media has dissected and manipulated these allegations to reach their own conclusions. I ask all of you to wait and hear the truth before you label or condemn me. Don’t treat me like a criminal, because I am innocent.

I have been forced to submit to a dehumanizing and humiliating examination by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles Police Department earlier this week. They served a search warrant on me which allowed them to view and photograph my body including my penis, my buttocks, my lower torso, thighs, and any other area that they wanted. They were supposedly looking for any discoloration, spotting blotches, or other evidence of a skin color disorder called vitiligo which I have previously spoken about. The warrant also directed me to cooperate in any examination of my body by their physician to determine the condition of my skin including whether I have vitiligo or any other skin disorder. The warrant further stated that I had no right to refuse the examination or photographs and if I failed to cooperate with them they would introduce that refusal at any trial as an indication of my guilt. It was the most humiliating ordeal of my life, one that no person should ever have to suffer. And even after experiencing the indignity of this search, the parties involved were still not satisfied and wanted to take even more pictures.

It was a nightmare, a horrifying nightmare, but if this is what I have to endure to prove my innocence—my complete innocence—so be it. Throughout my life I have only tried to help thousands upon thousands of children to live happy lives. It brings tears to my eyes when I see any child who suffers. I am not guilty of these allegations, but if I am guilty of anything it is of giving all that I have to help—all that I have to give to help children all over the world. It is of loving children of all ages and races. It is of gaining sheer joy from seeing children with their innocent and smiling faces. It is of enjoying through them the childhood that I missed myself. If I am guilty of anything, it is of believing what God said about children: “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven.” In no way do I think that I am God, but I do try to be God-like in my heart.

I am totally innocent of any wrongdoing, and I know these terrible allegations will all be proven false. Again, to my friends and fans, thank you very much for all of your support. Together we will see this through to the very end. I love you very much, and may God bless you all. I love you. Goodbye.
