Organized by Dayton’s Gallery 12, Minneapolis, in collaboration with Sidney Janis Gallery, New York, this exhibition presented 32 paintings portraying the nude subject as well as five assemblages with common household objects by Tom Wesselmann (American, 1931–2004). Similar to other pop artists, Wesselmann’s sharp execution of the figures illustrates a cool, depersonalized approach to subjects of middle class America. With a pronounced focus on framing, Wesselmann, like James Rosenquist, used models as aids for his work and positioned subjects precisely within tight frameworks.
