This exhibition commemorates artist Roger Brown, who died at age 55 on November 22, 1997. Brown spent most of his career in Chicago and frequently painted the city and its environs. He was a central figure in a group of artists that has become known as the “Chicago School” or the “Imagists.” His clearly defined shapes, flattened imagery, and striking colors exemplify the Imagists’ style. Like most painters associated with the Chicago School, Brown often included human figures in his work; he stands firmly apart, however, in his emphasis on cityscapes, landscapes, and commentaries on current events, politics, and religion.
