Rena Leinberger’s MCA installation Possible Rooms, cloaks the gallery in a vinyl dustcover that reveals the imprints of Shaker chairs aligned against a wall, a reference to the separation of the sexes in Shaker society. The absence of chairs against the opposite wall underscores the fact that the remaining Shakers are all women. Inspired by the utopian ideals and the rigor of Shaker crafts, Leinberger aims to construct an ethereal, transparent homage to fading traditions and customs, one that might itself become a remnant of a no-longer practiced tradition, preserved and displayed in a museum.
