The summer entry in MCA’s ongoing “Projects” series will feature the work of Mary Brogger, a Chicago resident who has been exhibiting nationally and internationally over the past several years. Brogger, recently featured in “Time Arts Chicago” with her sets and costumes for performance artists Lawrence Steger, Paula Killen and others, will exhibit new works created especially for this show. Brogger first captured attention in Chicago with extraordinary works made of steel, including curtains and furniture. This usually prosaic and unwieldy material was transformed into lyrical “lace” by intricate patterns that the artist cut into it. In this exhibition, similarly mundane materials will be transformed into sculptures of beauty and wit, including a “freezer-pak” table and a life-size fez made of fake fur that whirls about like a dervish. Brogger studied at the Slade School of Art of the University of London and The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and currently resides in Chicago.
