The MCA organized the first major one-person museum exhibition of Lorna Simpson’s work in 1992, and since then the museum has continued to collect work by this politically motivated artist. Simpson’s text and photographic works eloquently question stereotypical images of women–specifically of black women–by simultaneously revealing and resisting conventional representations of gender and race. This exhibition, organized by MCA Curatorial Assistant Jessica Morgan, presents four recent works by the New York-based artist from the MCA’s significant collection of her work, including a pair of works, Wigs (1994) and The Clock Tower (1995), which were acquired by the museum during the inaugural year in its new building.
