Lauded as “nimble, progressive, and hard-swinging” by the Chicago Reader and “unpretentiously joyous” by NPR, Mike Reed’s People, Places & Things has been recording, touring, and wracking up critical acclaim since 2007. In 2008, the band released its debut recording, Proliferation, the first in a trilogy of releases celebrating the under-recognized creative forces of Chicago’s jazz, blues, and improvised music scenes in the late 1950s. On each of these recordings, the band offers insightful modern interpretations of musical gems from Chicago’s past. The group’s fifth record A New Kind of Dance(2015) added trumpet-work from Marquis Hill and pianist Matthew Shipp. As Bill Meyer said in Downbeat, People, Places & Things doesn’t “simply re-create; they create,” exploiting their carefully selected repertoire for dynamic ensemble interplay and virtuosic solo improvisations.
