Introduction to "The Living End"
Jamillah James: Welcome to The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies. I’m Jamillah James, Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. This audio tour will guide you through the exhibition. Along the way, you’ll hear from me, as well as a variety of artists in the exhibition. Look for the audio tour graphic in each space to begin the next section.
The Living End is an exhibition of and about painting. Over roughly 50 years, how has the development of technology, photography, and new media changed painting?
Let’s take a look together at the artists who are a part of The Living End.

Cheryl Donegan: Where does the painting exist? Does it exist on the canvas? Does it exist in the body? Does it exist in the screen? Could it exist in the screen?
Ken Okiishi: It’s a glowing set of things that produce through three or four colors, the infinity of windows anywhere at any time that can shift and change.
Cynthia Daignault: So at each of those moments of technological innovation, it asks new questions of painting, and painting responds. It presents new ways of seeing the world, and painting responds. At each moment, artists were able to use technological advances to see the world differently, and that’s reflected in painting.

STOP 01
The curator describes how new computer technology led to artistic experimentation, and artist Barbara T. Smith recounts her first encounters with a Xerox machine.
01: Early Computers
Jamillah James: Early computers and things like the Xerox machine were once only available to researchers, scientists, and people working at universities. When these means became a bit more available to artists and others like them, it really opened up the means of making new forms of art. So this early part of the exhibition is really looking at how artists use these technologies to come up with new ideas as to image production.
Leon Harmon was a researcher and he collaborated with Ken Knowlton, who was an artist and an early proponent of computer art. They worked together in collaboration with an organization called Experiments in Art and Technology, which was co-founded by the very notable artist Robert Rauschenberg. They made a work called Computer Nude together, which is a portrait of a reclining woman made completely of ASCII characters. ASCII is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, and what it is a precursor to the emojis that we know and use today, a series of punctuation marks and other glyphs that come together to form an image.
Others took a less institutional approach. Let’s hear from Barabara T. Smith about how she began using an early Xerox machine. Her work is the large orange piece in this gallery.
Barbara T. Smith: Well lithography and etchings and engravings are all technologies of prior era and that genre of art, however, is interesting. Artists have taken a technology that’s usually used to spread information to the public and turn it into a technology that will make original artworks. And so I thought, “What is the technology of our era?” And I thought, “Business machines.”
You know, I leased a nine-by-fourteen big Xerox machine, put it in my dining room around 1965, ’66 or so. And I spent at least eight or nine months going throughout my house and finding interesting and weird things to Xerox and make into artworks.
01: Primeras Computadoras
Jamillah James: Las primeras computadoras y aparatos como las fotocopiadoras sólo estaban al alcance de investigadores, científicos y personas trabajando en universidades. Cuando estas cayeron en las manos de artistas y otros creativos, aparecieron nuevas formas de hacer arte. STOP 02
The curator discusses how televisions changed how people experienced culture, and artist Howardena Pindell speaks about using her home TV set for new work.
02: Early Television
Jamillah James: The arrival of the television set was really a game changer. Here you have this device that, to that point, had not been conceivable arriving in the average home. People then had an avenue to experience a new form of media culture, not just reading newspapers to get their information, but actually seeing it live and in living color in their living room. People were able to experience the news, sitcoms, all of these different forms that hadn’t existed really at that point, except for maybe on radio. But now people are getting to see these things on a daily basis. This also changed the way that artists began to interact with media culture in that they had a new surface to consider, or new forms of information to think about and to incorporate into their work.
Take the work of Howardena Pindell, for example. She’s known for her large, colorful paintings that feature little hole punches and small handwritten numbers. Her series, Video Drawings, are on display in this gallery. They are photographs about the size of a small television screen.
Howardena Pindell: I bought a color TV and I, you know, I, I knew that I would be watching something in motion and I put it at a distance and I got very bored with the TV.
So for some reason, I don’t know what happened, I just bought acetate and acetate ink. I used a regular, you know, the kind of drawing pen with a nib that you pull out. And I just started writing numbers and vectors and putting little points and so forth, and I found that the acetate, when you put it against a TV screen, the static made it stick.
So I didn’t have to tape it or anything.
I had a camera and I had a tripod, and what I needed was a cable release so I wouldn’t jiggle, you know, and I just started shooting pictures.
02: Los Inicios de la Televisión
Jamillah James: Sin duda, la llegada de la televisión fue un cambio determinante. Se trataba de un aparato que, hasta ese momento, no se pensaba que llegaría al hogar promedio. The curator explores how the video camera opened up new perspectives for artists, and artist Leidy Churchman thinks through the possibilities of painting and video.
03: Painting and Video
Jamillah James: The video camera opened up a whole wealth of possibilities for artists. At the point that the video camera became more widely available, artists were not just thinking about performance in relation to their own bodies, but also performance in relation to other media. Painting and video have often enjoyed a friendly rivalry or an uneasy relationship with each other. And something that I wanted to tease out in this exhibition was how artists working in video and performance really commented on painting as a practice and also its mysteries, its mythologies, its problems, and putting their bodies in conversation with this in various ways.
Let’s hear how artist Leidy Churchman sees it. His Painting Treatments are playing on monitors in this gallery.
Leidy Churchman: Yeah. I think that oil paint is the most incredible tool, technology out there. The more we are involved with tech in our everyday lives, the weirder painting is.
There’s something with the video. There’s this instant gratification. It begged me to try out things in an impulsive way.
When you bring a body in, it gets things . . . I don’t know. Things get political. They get awkward. It makes you feel uncomfortable. You can’t look away when there’s a body. It’s very, very interesting.
You can see Painting Treatments and imagine doing it. You’re a part of it when you watch it. It’s like being at camp and playing games.
03: Pintura y Vídeo
Jamillah James: La cámara de vídeo abrió todo un sinfín de posibilidades artísticas. Justo cuando esta se hizo un poco más accesible, los artistas no solo estaban pensando en la performance en relación con sus propios cuerpos, sino también en la performance en conexión con otros medios. La pintura y el vídeo han tenido a menudo una rivalidad amistosa o relación incómoda. Y algo que yo quería destacar en esta exhibición era cómo los artistas de vídeo y performance comentan sobre la práctica de la pintura y lo misterioso que es esta, así como sus mitologías y problemáticas. Leidy Churchman: Sí, yo creo que la pintura al óleo es la herramienta y la tecnología más increíble que existe. Cuando más se involucra uno en el día a día con la tecnología, más extraña se vuelve la pintura.
Hay algo interesante en el vídeo. Una gratificación instantánea. Es un formato que me incitó a probar cosas de forma impulsiva.
Cuando introduces un cuerpo, se vuelve todo un poco . . . no sé. Como que todo se pone político. Hay algo molesto. Algo que te hace sentir incómodo. No puedes apartar la mirada cuando hay un cuerpo. Esto es muy, muy interesante.
Si ves “Tratamientos de pintura” te puedes imaginar que estás creándolos. Al observarlos, te vuelves partes de estos. Es como ir a un campamento a jugar.

Artist Cheryl Donegan opens up about the inspirations for her work Whoa Whoa Studio (For Courbet), which she filmed while pregnant with her first child.
04: Cheryl Donegan
Cheryl Donegan: My name is Cheryl Donegan. I’m an artist. I have made video in the past and I made video for a number of years. Now I do painting. But I also make clothes.
Well, Whoa Whoa Studio was kind of the fruit of intertwined impulses. I was expecting my first child, and this was ‘98, ‘99 during that pregnancy.
At the time, there was a bus ad of a heavily pregnant woman for Evian, you know, with her older offspring kissing her belly. And then this is sort of a cycle of purity and nourishment of the clean water. And I was like, yeah, I don’t relate. So I was like, I really wanted to get in there with, these are my ambivalences. Obviously I’ve chosen to bear a child, but I’m still ambivalent. How will this affect me? How will I navigate this world? Will I be different? Will I be irrevocably changed? Will I be a stranger to myself in that way of a grotesquery or a monster? What have I done?
But apart from that, it’s also about really feeling the sense of migration of imagery to screen and wondering what is the appropriate surface for painting at that point, the late 20th century? Where does the painting exist? Does it exist on the canvas? Does it exist in the body? Does it exist in the screen? Could it exist in the screen? And there’s a number of videos where I play with this idea of the surface as a barrier, both opaque and transparent, and sort of metaphorize it to skin, which is a transparent barrier itself.
A painting has always been a seductor or seductress, and it seduces things into its body.
And I find that such a mystical metaphor because it means that there don’t need to be any barriers, and there’s no need to be any death because it’s about letting something in to grow. And so it’s a rejection of death when you let someone into your body. It’s asking to be changed. It’s asking to be changed. And I think that that is a beautiful thing to let someone change your body by choice.
04: Cheryl Donegan
Cheryl Donegan: Me llamo Cheryl Donegan. Soy artista. Hice videos en el pasado, durante mucho tiempo. Ahora pinto. Aunque también confecciono ropa.
Bueno, la obra “Estudio epa epa” fue el resultado de varios impulsos entrelazados. Yo estaba esperando mi primer hijo, y esto fue en el 98, o el 99, durante ese embarazo.
En aquella época había un anuncio para Evian, en los autobuses, de una mujer muy embarazada, ya sabes, con su hijo mayor besándole la barriga. Y también había algo relacionado con el que el agua limpia es una especie de ciclo de pureza y nutrición. Mi reacción era como que, bueno, yo no me identifico con eso para nada. Entonces me dieron ganas de explorar eso usando mis ambivalencias. Porque obviamente yo elegí tener un hijo… aunque igual sigo siendo ambivalente. ¿Cómo me afectará ser madre? ¿Cómo voy a navegar por este mundo? ¿Seré diferente? ¿Voy a cambiar irrevocablemente? ¿Me voy a volver tan extraña para mí misma que me convertiré en algo grotesco o monstruoso? ¿Qué me he hecho?
Y aparte de eso, también se trata de sentir realmente esa sensación de migración de las imágenes a la pantalla, de preguntarnos cuál es la superficie apropiada para la pintura en aquel momento, a finales del siglo XX. ¿Dónde existe la pintura?, ¿en el lienzo?, ¿en el cuerpo?, ¿en la pantalla? ¿Puede existir la pintura en una pantalla? Y hay una serie de vídeos en los que juego con la idea de la superficie como una barrera, opaca y transparente a la vez. Y vuelvo esto en una metáfora usando la piel, que es en sí misma una barrera transparente
Un pintura siempre ha sido un seductor o una seductora. Una que seduce cosas hacia su propia corporalidad.
Me parece que esta es una metáfora muy mística ya que no hay barreras ni muerte; se trata de dejar entrar algo para que crezca. Cuando dejas que alguien entre en tu cuerpo estás rechazando a la muerte. Estás pidiendo que te cambien. Estás pidiendo que te cambien. Y yo creo que dejar que alguien cambie tu cuerpo por voluntad propia es algo hermoso.

The curator discusses how painters responded to the invention of photography, and artist Cynthia Daignault asks how photography has changed perception.
05: Photographic Technique
Jamillah James: Initially, when photography arrived, people thought automatically that it would replace painting. However, as we’ve seen since the 1960s, that hasn’t been the case at all. Artists have embraced photography as either source material for their own paintings, or also using a photographic style that is a hyperrealistic style to render images, be it from the real world, scenes that they’re familiar with, art historical scenes, so on and so forth.
Let’s hear how artist Cynthia Daignault approaches her painting. Her work is the set of 24 landscapes on a shelf. They’re called At Picture Lake (Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky).
Cynthia Daignault: I passed through the North Cascades National Park and I discovered this place, Picture Lake.
The park rangers named it Picture Lake because it presents this scene of the perfect vernacular American western landscape.
It’s called Picture Lake because it is a spot that presents itself as the perfect photograph.
When you think about landscape painting, you think about American landscape painting. You think about the Hudson River School and you think about classic panoramic scenes of American pristine wilderness.
So in 2024, do I see the landscape as a deep focus, panoramic, romantic space, or do I see it more as this collection of separate images.
How do we see nature today? How do we relate to nature? How do we understand it? And how do our bodies exist in that space?
Painters paint from life. And I think of myself as always painting from life. And the fact that I paint from a photograph rather than just painting from a tree is because we all spend more time looking at photographs than we do at trees.
05: Técnica Fotográfica
Jamillah James: Al principio, cuando llegó la fotografía, la gente automáticamente pensó que sustituiría a la pintura. Sin embargo, como hemos visto desde la década de 1960, ese no ha sido el caso en absoluto. Los artistas han usado la fotografía como material de partida para sus propios cuadros, o también utilizando un estilo fotográfico hiperrealista para representar imágenes, ya sean del mundo real, escenas que les resultan familiares, escenas históricas artísticas, etcétera.

Cynthia Daignault: Pasé por el Parque Nacional de las Cascadas del Norte y descubrí este lugar, el lago Fotográfico.
Los guardabosques le pusieron al lago el nombre Fotográfico porque presenta una escena de un paisaje vernáculo y perfecto del oeste de Estados Unidos.
Se llama Picture Lake porque es un lugar que se presenta como la fotografía perfecta.
Cuando uno piensa en la pintura paisajista, piensa en la de Estados Unidos. Piensa en la Escuela del Río Hudson. Y piensa en esas clásicas escenas panorámicas, aquellas de los prístinos espacios naturales estadounidenses.
Así que, en 2024, comienzo a ver el paisaje como un espacio de enfoque profundo, panorámico y romántico. O digamos que lo veo más como una colección de imágenes separadas.
¿Cómo vemos la naturaleza hoy?, ¿cómo nos relacionamos con ella?, ¿cómo la entendemos?, ¿y cómo se mueven nuestros cuerpos a través de ese espacio?
Los pintores pintan a partir de la vida. Y en mi caso yo siempre pinto a partir de la vida. Y el hecho de que pinte a partir de una fotografía, en lugar de pintar simplemente a partir de un árbol, se debe a que todos pasamos más tiempo mirando fotografías que árboles.

The curator shares how artists have engaged with the history of painting, and artist Celia Hempton talks about what it was like painting random people via webcam.
06: Traditional Subjects
Jamillah James: The history of painting has seen different tropes over time. The aristocratic portrait, a painting made of a wealthy person or a person of means, the landscape, capturing nature at its best or its most terrifying, the still life, the nude, and also religious or history paintings that are these sweeping epics that painters captured or imagined.
Artists are working currently and have historically, through these tropes, to unpack them, to twist them, to subvert them, to somehow corrupt them, to actually open up these ideas that were really narrow in how they were achieved, to make them a little bit more expansive, a little bit more democratic . . .
There are paintings from Celia Hempton nearby. Let’s hear from Celia on her inspirations and motivations to make these paintings.
Celia Hempton: Obviously, in historical portraiture that we know of or that has been historicized, we see a lot of the same kinds of power dynamics and the same gaze, i.e., often a female or slightly subjugated, objectified object person and then a straight male looker or gaze. And I wondered if there was a way to complicate that or disrupt those sorts of dynamics that you see on the canvas. But I have to say what I found most interesting about this series is that there’s always something that slightly disrupts any simple narrative or dynamic that I thought there might be.
Yeah, I think there’s moments of, fleeting moments of extreme intimacy and then like a push back to something much colder in a split second, which I think is very indicative of our online experience generally.
06: Temas Tradicionales
Jamillah James: La historia de la pintura ha tenido diferentes tropos a lo largo del tiempo. Por ejemplo, el retrato aristocrático o pinturas sobre personas adineradas, aquellos paisajes que capturan la naturaleza en su mejor momento o en el más aterrador, el bodegón, el desnudo, así como las pinturas religiosas o históricas, que son esas grandes epopeyas que los pintores capturaban o imaginaban.
Históricamente, y en la actualidad, los artistas crean a partir de estos tropos, los desempacan, retuercen, subvierten, los corrompen de alguna manera, para así realmente abrir estos tropos, esos que eran muy estrechos en la forma en que se realizaban, para hacerlos un poco más expansivos, un poco más democráticos . . .

Celia Hempton: Obviamente, en los retratos históricos que conocemos, o que se han vuelto parte de la historia, vemos muchos de los mismos tipos de dinámicas de poder y miradas; es decir, a menudo una mujer o una persona ligeramente subyugada, objetualizada, y luego un observador o la mirada masculina. Me pregunté si habría alguna forma de complicar o alterar esas dinámicas que se ven en el lienzo. Debo decir que lo que me parece más interesante de esta serie, es que siempre hay algo que discretamente interrumpe lo que yo pensé era una narrativa o dinámica sencilla.
Sí, creo que hay momentos, momentos fugaces de extrema intimidad, y luego viene como un retroceso hacia algo mucho más frío, todo esto en una fracción de segundo. Esto es muy indicativo, en general, de nuestra experiencia en la internet.

The curator talks about how the ubiquity of today’s computers has changed visual culture, and artist Ken Okiishi reflects on the intersection of the real and the virtual.
07: Late Computing
Jamillah James: Computers today are radically different than those that inspired the artists in the earlier part of this exhibition, in that computers are everywhere now. You have a computer in your pocket right now with your phone. You have computers at home. We cannot escape computers; they are everywhere. So this has really impacted the way that artists engage with them and that they have the luxury of having them be ubiquitous. They cannot just use computers as tools, but they can also reference the ways that computers have impacted visual culture . . .
Ken Okiishi’s work really thinks about the tactile and aesthetic aspects of the screen in our lives in a series called gesture/data (feedback).
Ken Okiishi: There’s a diptych of two screens that are canvases that are moving constantly, and then you notice that the paint is on your side of the screen.
Every time that I see the work in person I always experience it as pleasure, a kind of recognition that the possibility of touching something on our, meaning the outside of the screen, and the kind of light and image and brain space inside of the screen that they can happen at the same time is, I always experience it very . . . It’s a painting. It is a thing that paintings do that other things in a weird way don’t do.

Cada vez que veo esta obra en persona la siento como un placer, como una forma de reconocer de que algo toca nuestro . . . es decir, de que el exterior de la pantalla, y el tipo de luz e imagen y espacio cerebral, en el interior de la pantalla, pueden suceder al mismo tiempo… algo que siempre lo percibo como . . . una pintura. Es muy extraño que las pinturas puedan hacer cosas que otros formatos no pueden.

The curator discusses how the act of painting has been increasingly outsourced, and artist Petra Cortright explains her intensive digital painting process.
08: Human, Nonhuman, Posthuman
Jamillah James: Painting has become further disassociated from the artist’s hand or the artist’s body in recent years. Artists are not just outsourcing their work to printers or using computers to produce their work or writing algorithms to manufacture their paintings or other types of objects, but occasionally they’re also outsourcing this labor to other people.
The way that the show is organized is this mirror image of the early part of the show that looks at how artists used early computers and early media production tools like the Xerox machine, and then the very end of the show, which is about how artists are beginning to outsource the production of their work to computers, printers, other people, so on and so forth. And these two mirror images are situated at different points in history. The show is looking at a trajectory and a forward progression of these ideas from the 1960s and even before that to the present.
A great example, and a fitting way to close the exhibition, is to hear Petra Cortright discuss her work. It’s the abstract work with grays, reds, and yellows.
Petra Cortright: My paintings are made in Photoshop. Each brush stroke that you see is basically on its own separate layer. So the painting is almost like an environment. It’s composed of hundreds and hundreds of brush strokes and layers. I take a lot of photographs from the internet and sort of break them down into a painting, so I stretch pixels and smush them around and manipulate them.
I come from a whole family of artists, and lots of physical, traditional art materials were available to me. I just simply kind of was bored by them, for lack of a better word. And I found a lot of freedom and flexibility with using a computer.

Jamillah James: En los últimos años, la pintura se ha disociado más y más de la mano y hasta de los cuerpos de los artistas. Estos no sólo dejan que su trabajo sea hecho por imprentas, así como utilizan computadoras para producir sus obras, o escriben algoritmos para fabricar sus pinturas u otros tipos de objetos, sino que en ocasiones también los artistas subcontratan a otras personas para [00:23:00] este trabajo.
La forma en que está organizada la exposición es un reflejo de cómo los artistas utilizaron las primeras computadoras y herramientas de producción de medios, como la máquina Xerox. Y ya hacia el final de la exposición esta explora el cómo los artistas empiezan a delegar la producción de su arte a las computadoras, impresoras, incluso a otras personas, etcétera, etcétera. Así, tenemos dos momentos que se sitúan en diferentes momentos de la historia del arte. Esta exposición examina la trayectoria y la progresión de estas ideas desde los años sesenta, e incluso antes, hasta la actualidad.
Un gran ejemplo, y una forma adecuada de cerrar la exposición, es escuchando a Petra Cortright hablar de su trabajo. Su obra es la abstracta con grises, rojos y amarillos.
Petra Cortright: Mis pinturas están hechas con Photoshop. Cada pincelada que ves está en su propia capa. Así que el cuadro es casi como un entorno. Está compuesto por cientos y cientos de pinceladas y capas. Tomo muchas fotografías de Internet y las descompongo en un cuadro. De esa forma tomo los píxeles y los estiro, aplasto y manipulo.
Vengo de una familia de artistas y tenía a mi disposición muchos materiales físicos y tradicionales. Sin embargo, estos me aburrían, a falta de una palabra mejor. Por eso con la computadora encontré mucha libertad y flexibilidad.

Artist Laura Brothers introduces her ongoing project out4pizza, an online gallery where she makes and posts digital paintings.
09: Laura Brothers
Laura Brothers: My name is Laura Brothers. I’m the creator behind the digital online gallery that’s known as out4pizza, an unintended alias, but that’s what most people know it as.
It began as a sketchbook of sorts, a way for me to just play around with images I had in my head.
I was just making daily uploads of images that I made using software at hand, more specifically, older software that was still creating, by default, the types of images that I was interested in at the time, which were very computer-based, apparent made on a computer.
I like the tension that was created when I’m using these obviously digital tools to create something that is supposed to represent something that’s more analog and organic. It’s just looking at someone drawing a splash of paint with MS Paint. I just like that the tension and the uncanny, I guess that it somewhat creates. And I think that ties into the fact that a lot of the imagery I make, like I said, it’s having to do with whimsical thoughts and play and leisure, and I feel like drawing everything on a computer pulls it into this childlike or more lowbrow versus highbrow artistic style. I like playing with concepts that are highbrow, but doing it in a lowbrow way and just the relationship that forms out of that.

Laura Brothers: Me llamo Laura Brothers. Soy la creadora detrás de la galería digital en línea que se conoce como “AxUnaPizza,” seudónimo involuntario, bueno, pero así es como la mayoría de la gente la conoce.
Empezó como una suerte de cuaderno con bocetos; una forma de jugar con las imágenes que tenía en mi cabeza.
Simplemente subía a diario imágenes que realizaba con un programa que tenía a mano, específicamente, un programa antiguo que seguía creando automáticamente el tipo de imágenes que me interesaban en ese momento, las cuales eran muy informáticas, evidentemente creadas en una computadora.
Me gusta la tensión que se crea al utilizar estas herramientas, obviamente digitales, para una creación, se supone, que representa algo más analógico y orgánico. Es como ver a alguien dibujando una mancha de pintura con MS Paint. Me gusta que haya algo tenso y extraño. Y creo que eso se relaciona con el hecho de que muchas de las imágenes que hago, como he dicho, tienen que ver con pensamientos caprichosos y con el ocio y el placer. Y siento que dibujar todo esto en una computadora lo acerca a un estilo artístico más infantil, uno más sencillo que sofisticado. Me gusta jugar con conceptos sofisticados, pero de una manera sencilla. Me gusta ver la relación que se forma a partir de eso.
