Firelei Báez: All these artworks are co-creations because perception is completely self-guided. They’re loaded with information. Every painting is a story I can sit with you and tell you over days. And hopefully they are clues enough for you to follow.
The Drexciya myth is a story that was conjured by these two brilliant Detroit DJs in the middle of the crack epidemic and the industrial blight of Detroit in the 90s. These two young Black men drew out this story starting from one of the most horrific points of our history where enslaved peoples were being thrown overboard for insurance value. They imagined what would it be like if these folks were able to survive, and not just survive, but thrive in a new Black Atlantis?
It’s a very quintessentially American genius to take this point of social destruction and to imagine other ways of being. That is a story that has influenced the making of this piece that’s behind me. Layers of blue textile evoke both the canopy of stars and deep, deep, deep underwater. So you’re in the synesthetic space of luxuriant hug.
When you’re going in, you have these volcanoes of draped material around you that have these indigo prints on them. They are my own interventions. Symbols of Black resistance and healing around the world. So this is honoring both the Drexciya duo, the Yoruba pantheon of color, and hopefully offering you a place of respite. If people come here in freezing January and February and can just rest and imagine new ways of being, that would be reward enough.
In the middle of the composition of this room are these figures that are facing each other. You are, as a viewer, traversing between their gaze. They are tributes to the women of Drexciya, but also to the Haitian queen mother and her two daughters. There is a sculpture in the front of the exhibition that is honoring their place of residence, Sans-Souci. Sans souci translates to without a care. It’s a radical declaration to establish your right to joy and freedom after 300 years of brutal enslavement in what became Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
You know, people say always, “What’s the point of a story if it cannot change the moment?” But the power of myth and storytelling is that it can open up windows for other ways of being to kind of unlock our limits of perception. And we have so many other traditions that have given us those doorways to walk through every time.

Capas de tela azul evocan tanto el dosel de estrellas como las profundidades submarinas. Estás en el espacio sinestésico de un abrazo exuberante.
Al entrar, te rodeas de volcanes de tela drapeada con estampados índigo. Son intervenciones propias, símbolos de la resistencia y la sanación de la comunidad Negra en todo el mundo. Esto rinde homenaje tanto al dúo Drexciy, como al panteón yoruba de color, y espero ofrecer un lugar de respiro. Si la gente viene aquí en los gélidos enero y febrero y puede descansar e imaginar nuevas formas de ser, sería suficiente recompensa.
En medio de la composición de esta sala se encuentran estas figuras enfrentadas. Como espectador estás en el cruce entre sus miradas. Son homenajes a las mujeres de Drexciya, pero también a una reina madre haitiana y sus dos hijas. Hay una escultura al frente de la exposición, que rinde homenaje a su lugar de residencia, Sans Souci. Sans Souci significa “sin preocupaciones”. Es una declaración radical para establecer tu derecho a la alegría y la libertad después de 300 años de brutal esclavitud, en lo que se convirtió Haití y la República Dominicana.
La gente siempre dice: “¿De qué sirve una historia si no puedes cambiar el momento?”. Pero el poder del mito y la narración reside en que puedes abrir ventanas a otras formas de ser para desbloquear nuestros límites de percepción. Y tenemos muchas tradiciones que nos han brindado esas puertas para pasar en cada ocasión.
