About

William Staples’s elegant and austere paintings represent fragmentary cultural images from the years of his childhood in the 1970s and 1980s. His work involves a thorough process of researching pictures on the Internet and in libraries. He then draws the images and later paints them in an allusive and reductive manner. Staples’s paintings emphasize the relationship between the personal and private meanings of cultural representations and how these meanings change over time.
