About

Ernest Dawkins is one of the world’s premiere saxophonists and composers, whose life goal is for his music and compositions to reflect the evolving collective cultural memory of the American jazz aesthetic.

He is currently chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and executive director of Live the Spirit Residency. Dawkins is currently in residence at the Rebuild Foundation, directing the AACM's Great Black Music Ensemble every first Sunday of the month at The Currency Exchange Cafe. He is a recipient of the Joyce Award in conjunction with The Old Town School of Folk Music, composing and presenting an original composition titled Quantum Englewood with co-composer Rahul Sharma at the upcoming 19th Annual Englewood Jazz Festival. This festival is produced annually by Live the Spirit Residency. He is the leader and founder of several ensembles, most notably the New Horizons Ensemble, Aesop Quartet, Chicago Trio, Live the Spirit Big Band, and the Chicago 12. Dawkins has recorded numerous CDs and his publishing company, Dawk Music, has 11 releases to date.

In case of rain, the event takes place inside the MCA’s Kovler Atrium.

Our annual summer performance series highlights artists from Chicago’s internationally renowned jazz community.
