Chicago-based bassist, composer, and bandleader Matt Ulery has developed an instantly recognizable sound. Known for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures, and expressionistic emotionalism, Ulery’s music is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk—specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folk styles. He has been performing for 20 years on upright, electric, and brass basses.

Ulery is joined on the Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden by Eighth Blackbird, the Chicago-based, four-time Grammy Award–winning sextet. Currently the MCA artists in residence, the sextet has provoked and impressed audiences for 20 years across the country and around the world with impeccable precision and a signature style, combining the finesse of a string quartet, the energy of a rock band, and the audacity of a storefront theater company.

Tuesdays on the Terrace

Enjoy an evening of free music on the MCA's Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden with our annual summer performance series highlighting artists from Chicago's internationally renowned jazz community.

Dine on our terrace and enjoy a buffet, which features a changing menu of themed dishes using fresh, locally grown produce from the SOAR Farmers Market. Reserve a table by calling 312-397-3805. The buffet is $27 per person.

For a more impromptu evening, open seating is available on our terrace or bring a blanket to relax on the lawn. Food may be purchased from our outdoor grill along with cold beverages, wine, and seasonal cocktails from the bar in the sculpture garden.

Sorry, outside food and beverages are not allowed.

In case of rain, the event takes place inside the MCA Café.
