John Parot

About

The imagery and aesthetic of John Parot’s drawings and works on paper stem from adolescent musings and doodles. Cryptic and poignant texts mingle with curlicues, stars, and circles on vividly colored paper, referring to romantic dreams, crushes, and disappointments. Partly autobiographical, Parot’s work reflects the daily dramas in his life, with emphasis on the tribulations of a young man. He often combines drawings with wall paintings to create dense and vibrant large-scale installations.

John Parot was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1970. He received a BFA from Northern Illinois University in 1993 and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1998. In the same year, he was awarded a post-graduate fellowship at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2002, he was one of four artists commissioned by Mini Cooper to decorate one of its cars.
