Tobias Rehberger will create a work for the MCA that will transform the front plaza and interior public spaces of the museum into a sculptural garden installation, covering the space with a dynamically designed arrangement of various types of vegetation. The project will be one of the first and most ambitious American presentations of this emerging German artist. Rehberger is best known for creating installations and sculptures that become integrated environments, simultaneously existing as art and as more traditional functional spaces or objects.
Tobias Rehberger has had solo exhibitions at such prestigious institutions as the Kunsthalle Basel and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm in 1998, and at the Portikus, Frankfurt and the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Köln in 1996. He has shown in numerous group exhibitions including Manifesta 2, Luxembourg (1998); Future-Present-Past at the 47th Biennale di Venezia (1997); Skulptur Projekte Munster (1997); Truce: Echoes of Art in an Age of Endless Conclusions at Site Santa Fe (1997); and Rooms with a View at the Guggenheim Museum SoHo (1997).
