In Focus: Alexander Calders from the Leonard and Ruth Horwich Family Loan
About the Exhibition
This exhibition showcases The Leonard and Ruth Horwich Family Loan of fifteen works by Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1976), one of the twentieth century’s most prominent artists. Calder’s Polychrome and Horizontal Bluebird (1954), a gift of Ruth Horwich to the MCA Collection, is also on view. Calder’s development of the mobile in the early 1930s distinguished him as an innovator of art that responds to its physical environment. This exhibition includes works 1920s to the mid-1960s, spanning almost the entirety of his career and demonstrating Calder’s extraordinary range. Stabiles and mobiles made of sheet metal, found objects, wood, and bronze, and show the artist’s explorations of both geometric and organic shapes.
