Lucky DeBellevue The Underneath

About the Exhibition

Installations in the MCA cafe are part of an ongoing series of presentations of work by young and emerging artists. New York-based artist Lucky DeBellevue has created a colorful sculpture made of plastic chains and chenille stems that hangs from the cafe ceiling. DeBellevue crafted the piece, entitled The Underneath, entirely by hand, working on it in his studio over a three-month period. He created the piece in modules, which he assembled and installed at the MCA. The work shows DeBellevue’s interest in biological metaphors, sensual textures, a rich color palette, and the process of handcraft. Since 1993, DeBellevue has used chenille-the brightly colored wire stems often used in craft projects-as his primary material. He is fascinated with the decorative possibilities of this material: its ornate quality, its colorful range, and texture.
