Jefferson Pinder investigates the idea of the museum as a safe space. The project speaks to random violence in Chicago neighborhoods as visitors' points of view begin to shift in order to avoid a performative "line of fire."

About the Artist

Jefferson Pinder's work provokes commentary about race and struggle. Working primarily with neon, found objects, and video, Pinder investigates identity through the most dynamic circumstances and materials. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo shows including exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, Showroom Mama in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and The Phillips Collection and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Pinder's work is currently on view at the new Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, and he recently exhibited at the 2016 Shanghai Biennale. In 2016, Pinder was awarded a USA Joyce Fellowship Award in the field of performance and is a 2017 John S. Guggenheim Fellow.
