Many artists make books to explore alternate ways of communicating ideas and composing images. Representing Nature presents a selection of works from the MCA’s collection of artists’ books in which artists have drawn upon nature and the landscape as subjects for exploration, subversion, and critique. Video documentation of Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and Christo’s Running Fence are presented along with artists’ books by Ed Ruscha, Dick Higgins, John Cage, Bruce Naumann, and Sol LeWitt, among others.
With the launch of this website, the MCA has created a platform for archiving and publishing images and stories from our 50-year history. Though many exhibition pages currently lack descriptions or illustrations, we’re committed to a program of ongoing research that will fill in the blanks over time. If you have information about past MCA exhibitions to share, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
