Fantastic Drawings showcased works of pre- and postwar European avant-garde art from prominent Chicago collections. The exhibition featured expressionist, Dadaist, and surrealist figurative art from a wide array of artists whose work concerned diverse subject matter, including human desire, mass media, and the unconscious mind. Featured artists included Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Hannah Höch, and Hans Bellmer.

Fantastic Drawings presented loans from 36 notable Chicago collections, including those of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Shapiro, Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Mayer, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin A. Bergman, and Mr. and Mrs. Donn S. Shapiro.

This exhibition was curated by Joseph Shapiro.
