June Wayne, founder of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, invites Garo Antreasian to serve as the first technical director and master printer of Tamarind.

After having realized she had to go to Paris to have lithographs executed properly, June Wayne secures a Ford Foundation grant to open the Tamarind Lithography Workshop on Tamarind Avenue in Los Angeles. She hopes to revive the art of lithography through fellowships for artists.

Garo Antreasian returns to Herron as an instructor but continues as Technical Advisor to the Board of Directors at Tamarind.
1962
Garo Antreasian initiates preliminary training programs for Tamarind Printer Fellows at Herron.
1963
Miriam Schapiro holds a Tamarind Lithography Workshop fellowship from July through August.
1964
Miriam Schapiro receives a Ford Foundation Grant to hold a lithography workshop at Tamarind in Los Angeles.

Bruce Conner has a two-month residency at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop.

Garo Antreasian initiates preliminary training of Tamarind Printer Fellows with Clinton Adams, associate director of Tamarind.

Billy Al Bengston is named a Tamarind Fellow.

Ed Ruscha is invited to work at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop on a two-month fellowship.

June Wayne applies for a grant from the Ford Foundation to establish the Tamarind Institute, an expansion of the Lithography Workshop.

Tamarind Lithography Workshop, founded by June Wayne, moves to Albuquerque, New Mexico, from Los Angeles and becomes the Tamarind Institute, a division of the College of Fine Arts of the University of New Mexico.

Vija Celmins begins a printmaking practice in earnest at the Tamarind Art Institute and is invited to work there.

Judy Chicago is named a Tamarind Fellow.
