ILLUMINATED THINGS

A smash hit with MCA audiences when it debuted as the MCA Plaza Project in 2013, Amanda Ross-Ho's sculpture THE CHARACTER AND SHAPE OF ILLUMINATED THINGS has been revived for the Public Art Fund’s current exhibition in New York, Image Objects. The exhibition explores “the work of seven international artists who share an interest in digital culture and its influence on the relationship between images and objects,” and Ross-Ho's concept remains roughly the same, exploring how art becomes a photographic subject itself, how the viewer can become a photographer and potentially an artist themselves, and how images of the sculpture circulate and mutate. For the installment in New York, the sculpture has been shrunk in size, with a neon frame added to the head—a nod to facial recognition in photography—and the title has been tweaked to THE CHARACTER AND SHAPE OF ILLUMINATED THINGS (FACIAL RECOGNITION).
