CarianaCarianne
About
With an ambition and aesthetic that recalls the Fluxus movement of the 1960s, CarianaCarianne (American, b. 1971) crosses the boundaries of art and life in her performance-based works. With an installation comprised of letters, legal documents, videos, photographs, and other objects, CarianaCarianne demonstrates how legally changing her name is the first step towards public recognition of her two selves coexisting in one body. In Management of Expectations: How Does One Become What One Is? they alter and add letters and poetictexts to the space every day providing the basis for their ongoing project to expand the relationship between one's body and definition of self. They challenge generally accepted distinctions between life and death, mind and body, public and private, sanity and insanity.
