Site Specific
About
The term “site-specific” usually connotes Earthworks of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as installation art of the 1980s and 1990s, works that responded to the space of creation or display. This exhibition plays with the term by applying it to a group of works that represent places rather than interventions of architectural or environmental spaces. The works taken from the MCA Collection for this exhibition reflect the unique cultural, social, economic, or geographical characteristics of places—from remote locations such as the Namibian desert to politically volatile sites including Derry, Ireland, as well as more familiar American cities—in order to recapture what makes them different from other urban or rural locales around the world. Site Specific presents works in a variety of media by Doug Aitken, John Cage, Willie Doherty, Sharon Lockhart, Richard Long, Brice Marden, Donald Moffett, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, Robert Smithson, Thomas Struth, and Carrie Mae Weems.
This exhibition is curated by Curatorial Assistant Julie Rodrigues Widholm.
