Just Like Music: Sound in the MCA Artist’s Book Collection

Many contemporary composers and visual artists have experimented with the visual presentation of music. This exhibition explores ways in which sound informs the visual arts. Artists' books by Destroy All Monsters, Ed Ruscha, and Alvin Lucier document a range of music from noise bands, to popular music and everyday sounds. Just Like Music includes musical scores, record album covers and a compilation of sound from artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, Hermann Nitsch, and Ramelzee, among others. Integrating artwork and a variety of sound, Just Like Music demonstrates the power of sound not only to move, but also to create an alternative sphere.
