In conjunction with the major reinstallation in the MCA’s 4th floor Collection galleries, this exhibition, which is drawn from a variety of works in the MCA Collection and supplemented by key loans, will examine how aspects of American society and culture have served as a fertile subject for contemporary artists. Beginning with Robert Rauschenberg’s Retroactive II (1963) and Andy Warhol’s Jacqueline Kennedy (1964) - works permeated with the imagery of American political and economic ascendancy and cultural hegemony - the works of art included will trace the contradictions and hybridizations that have increasingly emerged within and outside of society and culture as we move into the 21st century.
This exhibition is co-curated by James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator Elizabeth Smith and Manilow Senior Curator Francesco Bonami.
