Theatre of Drawing: Early Artworks of Robert Wilson

About the Exhibition

The Theater of Drawing: Early Artworks of Robert Wilson is an in-depth look at several of the artist’s early works, including his landmark collaboration with composer Philip Glass, Einstein on the Beach. The exhibition will feature notebooks and drawings-many of which have never before been exhibited-as well as furniture, audio clips, an original costume, and a multimedia projection exploring the process of Wilson’s early work.

The exhibition complements Monsters of Grace, a three-dimensional animated film that is the first full collaboration in 20 years between Wilson and Glass. Monsters of Grace will be presented by CAPA in association with the MCA at the Chicago Theatre on March 5-6, 1999.

The Theater of Drawing: Early Artworks of Robert Wilson is curated by Brooke Hodge, Director of Lectures, Exhibitions, and Academic Publications at the Harvard Design School; Paul Kaiser of Riverbed, the initiator of the exhibition concept and the multimedia producer; and Geoffrey Wexler, Archivist for Robert Wilson. The installation is designed by Marco Steinberg. The exhibition was organized by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in conjunction with Wilson’s receiving the 1998 Harvard Excellence in Design Award. The exhibition is coordinated by Staci Boris, MCA Associate Curator.
