This exhibition features several of Lichtenstein’s large interior paintings of the 1990s and traces their development from early stages in scrapbooks and sketchbooks to monumental finished works. It also features drawings, collages, prints and sculpture. The interiors of his last years encompass a vocabulary of forms, subjects and ideas developed throughout his 40-year career. Many works in this exhibition have never before been shown publicly.
In conjunction with the exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: Interiors, the MCA has published this sumptuous, full-color catalogue. Essays by Robert Fiztpatrick, Dorothy Lichtenstein, Leo Castelli, Sidney B. Felsen, and Cassandra Lozano provide intimate, insightful views of Roy Lichtenstein's art and life. With astonishing fidelity, the illustrations reproduce the artist's bravura paintings, sculptures, drawings, and other works, and show how these remarkable works took shape.
This exhibition is curated by MCA Director Robert Fitzpatrick with Dorothy Lichtenstein, and is organized by Assistant Curator Michael Rooks with Cassandra Lozano of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation.
