In Progress: Seed Lynn and Sadie Woods present Ghoema: When the Party is a Protest
Artists Seed Lynn and Sadie Woods present their ongoing research and performance project, Ghoema: When the Party is a Protest. Ghoema (named for a Cape Malay drum and rhythm motif), is a study of diasporic carnival traditions. As the drum centers the ceremony's spirit, Gheoma centers the role of communal memory and creolization in the wake of slavery, colonization, and systemic oppression.
Lynn and Woods chronicle their folk research practice through documentary photography, sound, and video works from Africa, the Americas, and Europe. When The Party is a Protest is part discourse and part proposal: inviting the audience to ask, "How do you remember? How do you carnival?"
Ghoema is supported in part by the Propeller Fund.
In Progress is a series of public programs designed to give artists, thinkers, and curators a platform for developing new works, and to give patrons a glimpse into the creative process. In Progress is organized by Curator January Parkos Arnall and Assistant Curator Christy LeMaster with the Performance and Public Practice teams.
