Summer Tuesdays come alive on the MCA’s Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden with free music highlighting artists from Chicago’s internationally renowned jazz community. This week features the Carolyn Fitzhugh Quartet, a small ensemble led by vocalist Carolyn Fitzhugh with Darwin Nogeura on piano, Mike Benning on bass, and Neil Hemphill on drums.
About the Artist
Chicago native Carolyn Fitzhugh is an improvisational vocalist and composer. She began taking classical piano lessons at age 5 and soon after began writing simple melodies. She later fell in love with jazz piano and the intriguing styles of Herbie Hancock. She sat in at various clubs including the New Apartment Lounge, where she sang for two years straight as a regular participant of the legendary Von Freeman’s weekly jam session. While studying accounting at Chicago’s Roosevelt University during the day, she attended Bloom School of Jazz in the evenings where she studied piano improvisation and jazz vocal improvisation.
