In the Bowie Changes concert series, Chicago musicians shake down the Bowie songbook, recreating it their way. Alt-country rabble-rousers Jon Langford and Sally Timms, former collaborators in the post-punk band The Mekons, salute the Starman, waving a tattered flag for unforgettable Bowie love songs.
Timms blends rapture and disenchantment in a way that recalls those old cliches about why caged birds sing. Her voice, a secretive murmur refined by her native English accent, is the stuff of lullabies. But her knowing stance pulls back from that intimacy with a sweet sadness.

About the Artists
In addition to The Mekons, which Jon Langford and Sally Timms helped start in Leeds, England, other regular music projects they are associated with include The Waco Brothers and The Pine Valley Cosmonauts, featuring a revolving assortment of Chicago musicians. Earlier MCA engagements include the Mekons's operetta Pussy King of the Pirates, a collaboration with the late Kathy Acker; and Langford's multimedia project The Executioner’s Last Songs, featuring his paintings of famous and forgotten early country music legends.
