MCA Stage Roundtable: Carmen: New Renderings

One of the most unwavering classics in the operatic canon, the story of Carmen has provided interpretive fodder for many great thinkers and artists. Extending MCA's investigation into the intersections between different art disciplines, director Andrew Eggert and conductor Alexander Platt of Chicago Opera Theater (COT) discuss their investigation of Carmen's deconstructionist unraveling by Peter Brook and the 21st-century realization of this piece in COT's new production of La Tragédie de Carmen. They are joined by Spanish film scholar Samuel Amago (University of Notre Dame) who explores acclaimed film director Carlos Saura's projection of Carmen onto cinematic screens in his flamenco retelling of this story.
