Contempo with Leny Andrade
and special guests

Presented by University of Chicago Presents in association with the MCA

In a sizzling double-bill concert, new-music collective  Contempo, led by composer and Artistic Director Shulamit Ran, with artists-in-residence eighth blackbird, perform with the queen of bossa nova, legendary Brazilian singer Leny Andrade.

The first half of the concert features the highly acclaimed members of eighth blackbird performing a program of music by three stellar American composers: Donald Crockett's west-coast post-minimalism in Whistling in the Dark; Cambodian-American Chinary Ung's Eastern sensibilities and spirituality in Still Live After Death, featuring mezzo soprano Nina Heebink; and Lee Hyla's pulsating, jazz-inspired duo, We Speak Etruscan for bass clarinet and baritone saxophone. The second half of the program features the virtuosic improviser Leny Andrade with her trio, pianist Dario Eskenazi, bassist Kip Reed, and drummer Helio Schiavo.

Running time: 1 hour 50 minutes, with 20-minute intermission
