on winning the Spalding Gray award

Named after American actor and writer Spalding Gray, this year's SG Award, which supports fearless innovators of theatrical form, went to a Brit: Tim Etchells of Forced Entertainment. Awarded by Performance Space 122, the Walker Art Center, the Andy Warhol Museum, and On the Boards festival, the Spalding Gray Award includes monetary support of a new work. The company, a constant at MCA Stage this February, presents (In) Complete Works: Table Top Shakespeare, their final engagement, this weekend.

Etchells’s acceptance speech

. . . making theatre or performance is always at its best an act of re-making—re-purposing and re-inventing forms in order to better meet and speak into the times we are living in.
