Top 10 Art Events of 2016

Mona Hatoum, Tate Modern, London

Mona Hatoum is, for me, one of the most important artists who has ever lived; her first US museum exhibition took place at the MCA in the 1990s and was one of the major draws for me to the museum. I am excited to see this comprehensive survey of her work.

Electronic Superhighway, Whitechapel Gallery, London

I don’t ordinarily plug my own shows, but this exhibition, which features more than 70 artists and 100 works, brings together more than five years of research on the relationship between art and the internet.

Global Megamuseums

There are so many remarkable museums reopening in 2016, and I can't wait to see what these institutions have for us all: from the new SFMOMA in San Francisco and the Met Breuer in New York to the revamped Tate Modern in London and the Louvre in Abu Dhabi.

Nasreen Mohamedi, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Nasreen Mohamedi was one of the most important artists to emerge in post-independence India. Her body of work has become an important part of the modernist discourse, and I am glad to see that the Met is giving her biggest show to date in their takeover of the Breuer building.

Dhaka Art Summit

South Asia has long been underrepresented on the global art map. I am very happy to see this international exhibition in the bustling heart of the Asian subcontinent.

Art Dubai

This is my annual go-to event; I can’t imagine not going. The fair’s director, Antonia Carver, has shaped this into the landmark event that it is today.

Anri Sala: Answer Me, New Museum, New York

I adore this Albanian-French artist and I am looking forward to seeing what Massimiliano Gioni will do with this survey.

Patti Smith, Robert Miller Gallery, New York

Patti Smith is arguably one of the greatest living artists. We know her for her writing, her poetry, and her music, but few know her as an incredibly prolific visual artist. Rumor has it that she will have a major exhibition of new work at Robert Miller Gallery this March.

Kerry James Marshall, MCA Chicago

I think Kerry James Marshall’s work has long been misunderstood. Seeing this major survey at the MCA is a major highlight of the global art calendar.
