Using sound, lights, and video, performers from around the world create new experiences that expand your concept of music. The MCA's musical events take place in the intimate Edlis Neeson Theater, on the Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden, or other spaces around the museum.
Short A young black woman stands at a microphone, her mouth open in a cry or in song. She holds a curved length of wood or bone above her head with both hands.
Long A young black woman with closely cropped hair stands at a microphone, her mouth open in a cry or in song. She is dramatically lit by warm light from her left in an otherwise cool dark space. She holds a yard-long curved length of wood or bone above her head with both hands. Her garment is gathered at the waist and draped around her torso. It covers her right arm with a long sleeve and leaves her left arm exposed. Behind her a second performer kneels at a second mic, working with an electronic instrument. The space behind them is dark, but a length of corrugated steel, painted in varying colors, lies behind them.
Short A group of young people pose playfully in an empty room standing in an semi-circle behind one person wearing a cat mask, black shirt and pants, and bright yellow shoes. Some wear brightly colored wigs and colorful clothing.
Short There are two women in a stairwell performing: one on the upper landing plays a cello and looks at the camera while the other woman appears on a lower level, lifting an arm and leg up as if dancing.
Short A woman sits at a piano in a dimly lit club. She tilts her head to the left and smiles.
Long A woman sits on a bench in front of a piano in a dimly lit club with dark curtains. Her right arm rests in her lap and her left hand scratches the top of her head. She tilts her head to the left and smiles. Photographs of other musicians cover the back walls.
