  • Don Baum, J'ai Seul la Clef de cette Parade Sauvage, 1965
An overhead view of an open wooden box reveals strange objects.
    1. Long An open wooden box shows different objects on both sides. On the left side of the box are twelve carefully arranged doll arms. It appears as though these arms, and the surface to which they are affixed, have been painted over with matte black paint. The paint is lightly chipped away in some areas. On the right side of the box appear to be some sort of tools, one that resembles a sort of rusted trowel attached to a chain and the other a wooden brush with extremely long bristles. The box and its contents all look old and worn, like something you might find in an old attic. The overall composition leaves an eerie, otherworldly impression.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A screen print of red, yellow, black, white, and gray rectangles and squares of different sizes are arranged in various perpendicular orientations.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A rectangular screen print with a dark background is divided into two smaller rectangles that contrast with each other intensely. The rectangle on the right contains a pattern of curves taken from the color of the rectangle on the left.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A rectangular grid of squares contains three bands of squares: the center horizontal strip is a blue grid on a gray background, the top and bottom grids are gray on a black background. The varying colors convey an illusion of negative space.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A head-on view of a tall plexiglass sculpture shaped like a thin rectangle stands perpendicular to the ground. At the bottom of the sculpture is a black square striped with thin white stripes, resembling an air vent.
    1. Long Affixed to the top of the sculpture is a small translucent plank from which hangs many thin strings. At the end of these strings are a variety of thin blue and black sticks hanging at various jaunty angles. They resemble the childhood game of pick-up-sticks. Due to the translucent nature of the sculpture, the sticks on the other side of the plank are visible as well, creating an interesting dimensionality.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A sculpture shaped like a tall, thin rectangle is a vivid shade of yellow. The bottom quarter of the sculpture is translucent and striped with thin black stripes.
    1. Long Affixed to the top of the sculpture is a small white plank from which hangs many thin strings. At the end of these strings are a variety of thin sticks in shades of yellow and gray hanging at various jaunty angles. They resemble the childhood game of pick-up-sticks.
  • Jesús Rafaël Soto, Jai-Alai, 1969
A tall rectangular sculpture is divided into two smaller rectangles, one white and one with thin black-and-white vertical stripes. A red line diagonally bisects the middle of the sculpture.
