Oval has done it. Again. He has given birth to a record that could and should change the route of modern music.
The Berlin-based electronic music pioneer Markus Popp, aka Oval, returns to Chicago on the occasion of his striking new 70-track double CD “O” (Thrill Jockey). Often credited with reimagining 90s electronic music through glitch, he composed computer programs that processed scraps of found and invented sounds. Oval has now departed from that platform for his first release in seven years, utilizing readily available programs on a stock PC as his instrument. Pushing it beyond its sonic boundaries, he creates highly detailed and resonant rhythms and harmonies, beautifully balancing his personal musical voice and computer composition.
The concert opens with Peaking Lights, the psychedelic dub-pop duo from Wisconsin, and a special screening of panaromic lyrical works by Deep Magic, the solo film/music project by Sun Araw’s Alex Gray.
