This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s

The titles of these photographs, C-69, In Search Of …, and Island, offer little aid in deciphering their respective subject matter. While these evocative images conjure up natural landscapes, their sublime connotations are undermined by the reality of their construction: they are studio photographs of dark, velvet curtains sprinkled with flakes of store-bought Greek phyllo dough. Welling’s theatrical drapery tests photography’s capacity to achieve painterly abstraction and reveals the medium’s ability to obscure truth despite its claims to objectivity.
