This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s

Mary Heilmann’s Tehachapi #2 pits an inky black against an exuberant bubblegum pink, a palette familiar in punk and new wave music culture. Like Allan McCollum’s Plaster Surrogates (also on view in this gallery), Heilmann’s work reprises and undermines the modernist tradition of the monochrome (artwork created using a single color). Confronting the legacy of Kazimir Malevich (Russian, 1879–1935) and Ad Reinhardt’s (American, 1913–67) all-black paintings, Heilmann injects their art-for-art’s-sake seriousness with a dose of punk irreverence.
