In the 1990s, Chicago-based artist Jeanne Dunning made numerous lurid photographs such as this one, which tests our conditioning by the increasingly violent and sexualized media to interpret pornographic or gory meanings from otherwise banal subjects. Here, a close-up of the surface of what looks to be a tongue (but is actually a grapefruit) could be read as any number of types of exposed or flayed flesh.
