The Shape You Make When You Want Your Bones To Be Closest to the Surface invites you to choose your own path from different genres and settings, such as Porpentine Charity Heartscape's childhood backyard, vaguely remembered video games, and a dystopian vision of the internet's future. Using hypertext and the open-source, interactive storytelling tools Bitsy and Twine, the online game tells a nuanced story about memory and identity, resisting the violence and sexualization endemic to much of online gaming culture. According to Heartscape, the work is “an autobiographical sci-fi fever dream that focuses on gaming and the internet, two technologies I've had evolving, narcotic, dysfunctional relationships with throughout my life.”
